Years ago when my father was still on this earth, I remember him coming across the lyrics of one The Who’s songs from Tommy. I’m free the song was called and for a modern pop song the philosophic depth of it surprised him. And right he was, though I don’t think he was ever privy to the wider context of Tommy’s emancipatory journey into enlightenment and the teachings of Meher Baba in general.
Part of the lyrics seem interesting to one with a christian outlook on life:
I’M FREE-I’m free,
And freedom tastes of reality,
[..]If I told you what it takes
to reach the highest high,
You’d laugh and say ‘nothing’s that simple’
But you’ve been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple!
Indeed, freedom actually is very real. And you realy don’t have to do anything to “reach” the High. But there is a catch.
There has been (and shall be) only one Messiah. That Anointed One
has never encouraged anyone to leave any temple (except for the money exchangers…) and He certainly did not point to any door. That is, He did not point anyway from himself. As a matter of fact He claimed to actually be the Door himself. No one could come to (God) the Father but through Him as a door. And the most amazing stuff he did in his life on earth was not curing sick or even raising from the dead: He forgave other peoples transgressions against their fellow man and against God.
Think about it: your neighbor has done you wrong. And here comes
this man who says that your neighboor is forgiven. How would you feel about that? Here is some one who claims ownership of all insults, of all injury. Strange thought: If you injure your neighboor, you’re actually hurting Him…. And to top that He also forgives you on behalf of God. There is as much claim of divinity in this as in bluntly saying “I am the Son of God”.
Whatever you do, whatever your stance toward Jesus, do not underestimate this claim. His is not a wise man or a prophet and not one of the most .. man that ever lived-phrases apply to him. He was either a raving lunatic, who deceived the world and himself, or he realy is the Son of God, the Shining mornings star, The Alfa and Omega, the Door, the Truth and Life itself.
Base your choice on facts. Not feeling.
